DUCTMASTERS PURE AIR MASTER UV LIGHT SYSTEMS

DuctMasters installs our own DuctMasters Ultraviolet Light Systems in new or recently cleaned air-conditioning systems. Our UV Light Systems minimize the chance of microbial growth and increase the system’s energy efficiency.

How does the DuctMasters UV Light System improve indoor air quality?

The use of Ultraviolet Light Systems to reduce microorganisms on the surfaces and airborne particles in the airstreams of air-conditioning systems actually dates back to the early 1900s (1).

There are three types of UV light: A, B, and C, each representing a different section of the UV light spectrum. Type C, known as UVC, is the form used for germicidal activity. When UVC light is used for germicidal purposes, it is referred to as UVGI or ultraviolet germicidal irradiation. UVGI “deactivates” or kills microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, molds, and other fungi by disrupting their DNA. “Deactivated” means the organism is not necessarily killed but can no longer reproduce.

One study of office systems reports a 25-30% reduction in airborne bacteria when UVGI was used on HVAC drip pans and cooling coils (2).

DuctMasters UV Light Systems include a Lifetime Limited Warranty on the ballast and a two-year warranty on the Ultraviolet bulb with every installation.

Will a DuctMasters UV Light System minimize odors?

Yes, it can. When odor elimination is a desire, we install a Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO) Grid along with our UV Light System. PCO works at the molecular level to break up common indoor odors as well as other organics including airborne viruses, bacteria and allergens(3). PCO purifiers are able to remove air contamination far smaller than can be filtered, so they are perfect to round out a complete indoor air quality system.

Is a UV Light System a substitute for air duct cleaning?

No, source removal of contaminants remains the single best method for cleaning and decontaminating air-conditioning systems including the air ducts.

Should I install a UV Light System myself?

It’s not recommended. The application of UVGI in air-conditioning systems can be an effective means to reduce airborne pathogens but only if lamps are properly and strategically installed and are properly maintained.

The biggest reason to have DuctMasters install our UVGI system is the Lifetime Limited Warranty on the ballast and two-year warranty on the bulb that comes with every install. Other companies typically offer only up to 1 year on the ballast and 1 year on the bulb.

Additionally, if installed in air-conditioning systems without proper training, UVC lamps can be largely ineffective and can create hazards or material decomposition that negatively impact the functioning of the system and put occupants and installers at risk.
