You probably read this title out of curiosity, not knowing the exact answer because knowledge on duct systems in your home is an unusual topic. So before you can generally diagnose the service you need, you should ask yourself these questions first:

  1. Do you suffer from any allergies?
  2. How old is your A/C and duct work?
  3. Have you ever had your ducts cleaned, and if so when was the last time it was done?
  4. Do you smell a musty/moldy odor?
  5. Are your energy bills too high?
  6. Do you notice dirt around your air vents/grills?

Based on your answers to those questions, you will be able to narrow down the correct services suited to your home. We inform you, as the customer, the signs to look for so you can do your own research. If you need an expert opinion, you can schedule a hygiene inspection with one of our Indoor Air Quality Specialists!

To start off, your air ducts can either be made of flexible material, sheet metal, or fiberglass. Flex ducts are the most common, but also happen to be the most fragile ducts. They can be salvageable with our cleaning and sealing methods, unless they contain mold or if the ducts are over 15 years old. Fiberglass ducts are most common type of ductwork in condos. If fiberglass ducts are not cleaned properly, they can cause pieces of fiberglass particles to be in your air causing irritation to your eyes, nose, and throat as well as worsening asthmatic reactions.

Although flex ducts are the most common type of ductwork, metal ducts last the longest. We always recommend refurbishment of metal ductwork before replacement with flexible ducts, due to the value they give the home. Below are visuals of all the different types of ducts.

We determine if your ducts need to be repaired or replaced from numerous signs such as: (1) if they are 15+ years old, (2) if they contain several leaks, and (3) if they suffered from rodent or fire damage. Leaks or holes in your ducts is what causes the inefficiency in your air flow. We are able to repair and sea areas in your duct system, but we recommend replacement if more than 25% of your ducts are deteriorated.

But should you replace your ductwork?

The fact is the replacement of ductwork is about three to four times the cost of our cleaning and decontamination process. Air duct cleaning is encouraged every 3-5 years to be able to maintain the system rather than having to replace it.

Whether the air ducts are cleaned or replaced, the air conditioning units need to be cleaned and decontaminated to prevent re-contamination of the ductwork. There are several ways to save you money and prevent the replacement of your air duct system.

Our proprietary air conveyance cleaning process in accordance to the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA) standards includes Mold Resistant Coating of any fiberglass ductwork after cleaning. This should also be applied even in the event of newly installed fiberglass ductwork, to prevent future mold and microbial growth.

What can be done for preventative maintenance?

We install our DuctMasters Ultraviolet Light Systems to minimize the chance of mold growth and maintain clean air which keeps energy efficient air-conditioner running at their peak efficiency. We also recommend our Healthway Air Filtration System which is a Class II Medical Device.
